Tuesday Severe Weather Threat

Dr. Reed Timmer, Lead Meteorologist March 15, 2016

Latest forecast models have trended slower / farther SW with Tuesday's storm system and the associated severe weather threat for parts of Illinois by late afternoon through evening.. I still think there will be an arc of a few tornado producing supercells tomorrow, initiating first by late afternoon near the MO/IA/IL border region before moving rapidly northeast. With such a strongly sheared environment increasing with time after sunset, I wouldn't be surprised if these supercells maintain a tornado threat overnight including the Peoria and even Kankakee areas.

With such cold air aloft over Illinois tomorrow, very large hail to the size of golf balls and larger will be common with any rotating supercell storms as well. These arcs of supercells in IL during early spring ahead of a cold upper-level low are notorious for producing more tornadoes than forecast, so please stay WARNING AWARE if you live anywhere between the MO/IL/IA border intersection (5-7 pm) through the Kankakee to even Chicago areas overnight.

Dominate the storm,

Reed
